Emmanuel Donkor. This book lays bare the heart of the christian faith. If you want to really understand what the gospel is all about, then this is your book. Surprisingly, this happens in Christianity too, the one religion that, properly understood, proclaims salvation from start to finish as a free gift of God, accomplished entirely by Christ. This manifests itself in teaching that Christians can lose their salvation so you better shape up and the belief that although God can empower you to do evangelism or whatever it is you are doing, it is still you who are doing it.
And what happens, as George knows from personal experience, is that people real Christians end up leading joyless lives and getting burned out. Because we have reduced the gospel to actually just half the gospel: we understand forgiveness of sins and we should but we neglect our new life in Christ. That part remains a mystery to us, and we have no idea what the New Testament means when it describes that part of the Christian life: being filled with the Spirit and living by faith. He gives a helpful illustration with the process of canning.
The only reason to sterilize jars is because you intend to put something in them. The only preoccupation of a branch should be the moment-by-moment receiving of the life of the vine. During his 33 years on earth, He lived as the perfect Man, the Second Adam. Even the miracles performed by Christ were actually done by God the Father working through Him in his role as the perfect Man. All of our sin and guilt becomes His to bear on the cross, and all of His righteousness that He earned in a life of total dependency and obedience becomes ours.
The real goal of the Christian life is knowing Christ! When we view ourselves as God now does as righteous, holy, children of God when we recognize our new identity in Christ, though we continue to sin, it no longer defines who we are and so it no longer enslaves us, and we can start to change.
I feel so dumb for settling for anything less than experiencing Jesus Christ Himself every minute. Our identity now is a child of God. In the same way, we ought not label ourselves with identities based on our behavior that is what the world does. But when after conversion our identity becomes that of a holy, righteous, child of God, then such behavior makes no sense; it is totally inconsistent with who we now are.
That will, in turn, bring your emotions and desires more in line with who you really are a new creature in Christ. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Wesley Roth. I was unable to participate in the small group study regarding the book, so I read on my own over the last couple months.
The author did a good job explaining how a life that Jesus provides -- a life "free from the bondage of the law, lived in the newness of His Spirit, and secure in His love" is available to all.
The author notes on p. Every human being born into this poor, sin-sick world is born with a craving for unconditional love and acceptance. When we learn to rely totally on Jesus Christ, we find Him to be just what He promised: the total satisfaction ofr that gnawing hunger and thirst.
In Him we find unconditional love, unconditional acceptance and meaning and purpose in life. All searching comes to an end in Him. I appreciated Mr. George walking through the Scriptures and sharing his experiences as a pastor, showing how we make sure we don't miss the grace and new life given to us through Jesus Christ.
Really hard to rate this one. Wanting to find out more about Christianity so a friend gifted me this book. However, several parts of the book made me cringe. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book and was challenged by it! I would say this book perfectly contextualizes what it means to be a disciple of Jesus if you have grown up in cultural Christianity and got stuck on the Western constructs and never truly learned what it means to know Jesus.
Peggi Tustan. I love this book! I'm re-reading it for mentoring on the topic of our identity in Christ. How we see ourselves as Christians is critical to living an abundant life in Christ. We need to experience daily the reality of knowing Christ. That's the real goal of the Christian life! Knowing Christ! Someone seriously failed when designing the cover on this thing. At first glance, all you see when looking at the cover is "ASS". Quentin Mullinix. Are you trapped in your legalistic Christian culture?
Read this book and get freed from all of that. I guarantee it will change you. This book was entertaining because Bob would meet people in dire circumstances, speak some truth into them via Scripture, and they would be cured, saved, or healed pretty much on the spot.
In his description of dealing with Sharon at the end of the book p. Maybe, but I doubt it. His grasp of Scripture is pretty amazing. He seems to understand well the intent of what Jesus and the Christian Bible he calls it New Testament writers are saying. What an honor and privilege. But almost every quoted Bible verse is New Testament, if not every one of them.
I started counting, but gave up. Took too many fingers. The real goal of the Christian life is knowing Christ. Life Application: Get back to reading the Bible more. NT for knowledge of God. OT for inspiration. I guess I could read for four minutes every night. I don't know anything about Bob George but I found myself being surprisingly critical of this book. I had to read this for a program I'm in and I was surprised at some problematic ideas that it holds.
I don't know if Bob George is a legit counselor but he does speak about counseling people in this book. He seems to ascribe to the biblical counseling model, meaning that it seemed like he believes all psychological problems can find their roots in sin and therefore the Bible is the only tool needed in a counseling setting. I don't agree with this since I believe God's truth is revealed in Scripture but is also revealed in science aka psychology.
Mental problems like depression can be due to sin in one's life but can also have many other factors that can't always be solved by reconciling yourself with God. He also mentioned at the end of the book a young woman who asked for his advice regarding being molested as a child by her uncles it was a more elaborate question than just asking for advice in general but I found his response kind of alarming because he basically just said to tell them that they can find forgiveness in Christ and to move on she mentioned that she had already forgiven them, which is awesome for her health and being able to move forward.
But what I found alarming was the fact that he didn't encourage her to go to the police or anything?? Offering forgiveness through Christ is fine and everything but there must be justice too. Not to mention keeping other's safe. I don't know, I just felt the whole story was problematic and not a good enough response from him. All that being said, I do feel that his heart is in the right place and he applied Scripture well and is genuine in sharing the things he's learned.
I think I would have found this book more helpful a few years ago but a lot of this stuff I've already been taught over and over. Lizzie J. Classic Christianity discusses the key elements that Christians believe and really delves into what it means to be a Christian. People sometimes start out their Christian walk strong, only to end up in difficult places because of errors in their basic theology. This book goes through some of the top mistakes in belief and helps to straighten them out by revealing the untruth.
It goes over topics like forgiveness, grace, faith, and acceptance, and uses real-life stories and Bible passages to support the text. I've read a lot of books about Christianity, and this is probably one of the best. Bob George does an amazing job of rooting down the bare basics of what Christians believe. He doesn't water down the information Instead, he explains the ideas which really are quite simple in easy to understand ways.
It reminds me of something that I hear a pastor say a lot. Lots of people get caught up in the nitty-gritty complexities of Christianity without understanding the hard standing core of their beliefs.
When that happens, they can get caught up in a state of bondage and despair. However, this book gives a clear understanding of the basic truths of Christianity, letting those errors be irradicated forever. This delightful little book gives a wonderful and approachable picture of Biblical Christianity. It is warm and readable from most any perspective. Refreshing for the veteran believer, totally free of any Christianese that would forbid the young believer or the non-believer. The only qualm I have with this book is that of style.
It is written in that somewhat tiresome ss self-help book style that many psychologists and counselors were writing at that time. It can get a bit dull reading about one anecdote after the next and start to wonder what all of these stories are serving to illustrate. Counseling is obviously a big part of the authors faith journey, which is neat All of this notwithstanding - this is a book I will happily recommend and distribute freely. It is a rare and pristine discussion of what it means to be saved by grace, grown in grace and glorified by grace.
Randy Ehrlich. Life Changing I grew up under legalism. What love means and how to live the Christian life abundantly with the peace, joy and freedom Christ came to give man with His death on the cross ushering in the New Covenant. No longer living by the Law of the Old Covenant, the Covenant made between God and man which was simply a tool to lead us to the need of a Savior who is Jesus Christ! Living by grace alone in Christ alone. I relax daily and simply rest and allow Jesus who lives in me to work through me.
Your greatest adventure is what lies ahead! Benjamin Page. There are simple truths that we miss in the gospel--truths that provide freedom and the ability to love and share.
Instead, we've been fettered all of our lives. If you are a believer in Christ, but have always felt stuck or far away from God, this book will help to open the cage in which you have been the cage we construct for ourselves, built with lies , and show you the life you have been missing.
It will be up to you to overcome your fear, place your full trust in Jesus, and come out of that cage. Eric Huber. Some very good stuff, but I would not recommend it He says lots of good things, and so I gave him 3 stars. However, his cognitive therapy approach to spiritual growth and a truncated perspective on how Scripture fits together prevent me from recommending the book in spite of the 3 stars.
He often is responding to straw men and uses Scripture more as an exclamation point rather than an exegetical foundation. Neil Pledger. Jesus Changes Everything. Bob George. Kindle Edition. Andrew Farley. Review "Bob George, seasoned counselor and radio host of "People to People," wrote this book for anyone who feels disappointed and empty, anyone who lacks peace, contentment, and joy in his or her Christian walk.
With a precise delivery, he portrays his own Christian journeyfrom his first fresh love for Jesus to a faith that eroded into empty disappointment over time and then came out on the other side. He uses personal illustrations in tones of genuine emotion to reveal that knowing Christ personally is far different from simply knowing about Christ.
Those who only know about Christ are in what he calls a "half-gospel" relationship instead of a "full-gospel" spiritual relationship. He delivers his thought-provoking message in a spirited manner that emphasizes how to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This book makes so much sense, easy to understand and enjoyable to read true grace.
Where was the power behind the faith? Where was the zeal that the disciples demonstrated after the Lord appeared to them after his resurrection?
I thought I was missing something in my faith, thinking the solution was going to be in one more book, one more audio tape, one more internet site, or one more Bible class. For years I struggled to find the "missing puzzle piece", wondering what I had to DO to find the contentment and satisfaction the Bible promised. Author and Christian Counselor, Bob George, identifies the heart of the issue, and gives a clear and logical explanation for solving it in his book, "Classic Christianity".
My mistake is that I thought I had to DO something to find satisfaction and fulfillment. Bob George teaches that it is not something we need to do, rather, we instead need to find or rediscover our love for God and what he has done for us, develop a life of dependency on the Lord, and then walk in obedience to his teachings.
I was trying to find fulfillment through my own effort, as a branch disconnected from teh life-giving vine rather than allowing the vine to give life to the branch. For it is only through discovering God's awesome love for us that we can fully appreciate his sacrifice on the cross and its tremendous meaning for the believer. Christ's death on the cross not only bought us our salvation and eternal life , but his resurrection from the dead brought us new life that we all need as believers.
Once we are assured that we are loved, forgiven, and accepted by God, we can finally stop trying to EARN his favor through activities. Our response to Christ's sacrifice and love is one of overwhelming gratitude and love in return. We cannot fully love or show our love to others until we love God first.
Once we find that reverence for the Lord, we are to model Christ's life on earth, and offer oursleves back to Christ in total dependency, allowing him to live in us. It is through Christ's life in us He is the life-giving vine, we are the branches , that we can then find the "power" to obey his teachings. Simple really, yet how many Christians miss this message?
I certainly did. Christians seem to endlessly debate the issue of works vs. The Bible clearly teaches Romans and Galatians we cannot "earn' our way to salvation through good works. Our good works and acts do not impress God as much as what is in our hearts. Do we give and pray out of a sense of obligation, or are giving and praying out of a sense of love for God and his Kingdom? Grace awakens in us the mind-opening recognition of love that God has for us. Grace then produces within the believer the natural response, which is to love God with all our beings and to follow his teachings and commands.
Therefore good works naturally follow grace, not out of a sense of obligation, but of love of God. Several reviewers have taken Mr. George to task for not placing more emphasis on good works in the life of the Christian.
Nothing could be further from the truth! As Mr. Geoge writes, good works are the natural result of experiencing God's love and acceptance. Good works are not "merit points" we earn for good behavior, rather, good works are the natural expression of a heart that is devoted to God. The key distinction is in the believer's attitude. Good works are certainly important, but good works do not in and of themselves earn our salvation.
